Current Technologies works with the City of Ottumwa, IA to deploy 30 surveillance cameras
September 9, 2011
OTTUMWA, Iowa — Ottumwa is adding a new system of cameras, but they are not designed to stop red-light runners or speeders, reported the Ottumwa Courier newspaper.
“We used it just the other evening when a burglary alarm went off at a business on Church Street,” Clark told the newspaper. Officials said Ottumwa’s camera system won’t focus on traffic, but instead will battle crime to make downtown safer and help support local businesses. Police received a $375,000 federal grant to put about 30 cameras downtown and near Quincy Place Mall. The funds also will be used to install computers in squad cars.
Clark said studies have shown the cameras and their warning signs reduce crime significantly. He said that’s exactly what downtown Ottumwa needs. “What I would like this to help is for this to revitalize the downtown so we have investors come back downtown and invest in the downtown area,” said Clark.
